Scope of Application
It is applicable to the detection of petroleum - type oils and oils of animal and vegetable origin in surface water, groundwater, seawater, and industrial wastewater.
Detection Principle
The instrument can be set to measure either only petroleum oils or petroleum oils + animal and vegetable oils + total oils.
Petroleum oils: Under the condition of pH ≤ 2, n - hexane is used to extract the oil - based substances in the sample. After dehydration with anhydrous sodium sulfate, magnesium silicate is used to adsorb and remove polar substances such as animal and vegetable oils. The absorbance is measured at a wavelength of 225 nm. The content of petroleum oils is directly proportional to the absorbance value.
Animal and vegetable oils: Animal and vegetable oils are complex mixtures without fixed absorption characteristics. To meet user needs, our company has tested various oils (including polar substances with similar characteristics), analyzed and summarized these substances, and selected characteristics that can represent the content of most animal and vegetable oils, so that their concentration is directly proportional to the absorbance.
Terms and Definitions
- Petroleum oils: Substances that can be extracted by n - hexane under the condition of pH ≤ 2, are not adsorbed by magnesium silicate, and have characteristic absorption at 225 nm.
- Animal and vegetable oils: Polar substances such as animal and vegetable oils that can be extracted by n - hexane and adsorbed by magnesium silicate under the condition of pH ≤ 2.
